I saw so many solar panels, I went back for a closer look!
A traffic diversion on the way to a friend’s took me along a street I wouldn’t normally use. What caught my eye wasn’t the traffic, but the number of homes with solar panels.
I went back on foot the next day and counted 42 homes with solar in just a five-minute walk - well over half the homes I passed. Perhaps not the answer to life, the universe and everything, but certainly an answer to what made this street special.
I’ve since learned these are council homes, with panels installed by Gravesham Council around five years ago. That explains the unusual concentration, but it also shows what widespread rooftop solar could look like on existing homes.
Finding out how much residents have benefited would make an interesting follow-up. For now, this is a glimpse of the future: streets where generating your own electricity is commonplace.
