The (un)achievable dream

When Nicky and I first spoke, her family were living in an older semi-detached home with her three children. Poor insulation and rising energy costs were putting pressure on an already tight household budget.

Nicky had no idea that help might be available through the Warm Homes: Local Grant.

After talking about her situation, I helped her apply for funding through the scheme. The improvements included replacing two flat roofs to improve insulation, installing humidity-detecting extractor fans, and adding solar panels and battery storage.

The cost to Nicky was zero.

The impact was immediate. Before the work was completed, electricity costs were around £11.66 per day. Following the improvements, they fell to around £1.36 per day during the summer months.

While the amount will be lower during winter, the family is currently saving around £10 per day and using the money to build up credit with their energy supplier ahead of the colder months.

"I had no idea grants like this existed. Without Dave's help, I would never have known about the Warm Homes grant or how to apply for it."
